Kembang
Suling is a Pan-Asian sonata composed by the New Zealand composer
and percussionist, Gareth Farr. Inspired by indigenous sounds, this
work evokes the gamelan and the suling (Balinese bamboo
flute) followed by the plaintive voice of the Japanese shakuhachi
flute. The last movement is a rollicking dance based on a South
Indian scale and set in repeated rhythmic patterns of 5/4, 5/8 and
5/16.

West Coast
composer Lou Harrison taught at the Black Mountain College in North
Carolina in the 1940s. As our first collaborative endeavor, this
ever-fresh composition is especially significant and dear to us.
We recorded this version one-week before Lou Harrison passed away
on February 2, 2003.
