Flute
and drum,
two of the most ancient and individual sounds in the musical universe,
unite in this innovative ensemble featuring Kate
Steinbeck on flutes and Byron Hedgepeth
on percussion.Together
they create a blend of musical timbres, rhythmic variety and groove
that captivate audiences. Their repertoire encompasses multicultural
and modern works by such notable composers as Lou Harrison, Alec
Wilder, Gareth Farr and Howard Hanson along with JS Bach, Spirituals
and fresh new Waltzes. This dynamic collaboration of sound features
the modern wooden flute, alto and bass flutes, a variety of drums
along with Chinese gongs, Tibetan bowls, vibraphone and marimba.
Kate
Steinbeck and Byron Hedgepeth first
performed together in Asheville, North Carolina in 1998. They have
performed live on public radio WCQS and for numerous concerts series,
colleges, universities and arts councils throughout the Carolinas.
In May 2004, Steinbeck and Hedgepeth gave concerts and master classes
in Belgium and France including an evening sponsored by the US Embassy
in Brussels.
Light
in the Corner, completed in March 2004, is their first
collaborative recording. It blends eclectic sounds of America and
Asia and evokes the vibrant beauty of primal cultures and World
